Reuse your unwanted DVD discs

If you are a fan of collecting music, video or data discs you most likely have many spindles of them lying around your house collecting dust. So what can you do with it all? If you get innovative you can come up with some very crafty ideas on what to do with old DVDsdiscs other than using them simply as useful but passé drink coasters.

Some useful ideas:

·   Scare off those unwanted birds:

Do you struggle with birds destroying your vegetable garden or pigeons sitting on     your window sill? String some CD or DVDsdiscs on a string and hang them, the reflection from the sun will scare them off.

·   Make a light switch cover:

Cut a hole in the middle and stick it to your wall with double sided tape for a techno look to your room

·   Make a fly swatter:

Fly’s getting you down, stick an old disc to a ruler and there you have it, a fly swatter.

·   Make a lamp out of discs:

Break a disc into medium size pieces and use them for mosaic for a lamp

·   Make a mobile for your child’s room

Stick pictures of yourself and your family to various old discs and string them together at different lengths to make a mobile for your child’s room.

·   Make your own disco ball

Cut discs in small squares and stick them to a ball to make your very own disco ball for your next party.

·   Make a CD locker magnet

Decorate a disc with pictures of your friends or family and stick a magnet on the other side and you will have a nice magnet to decorate your locker.

·   Create a Banner for your next party:

Stick CD’s together in the form of letters and put it on the wall for a sparkly party banner.

·   Create a funky ceiling

If you have more discs lying around than most, use them to cover the ceiling of your room to create a cool and different look.

·   Create a CD holder

Cut your discs in half and glue them to a stick or cardboard to store the rest of    your CD collection.

Recycling unused data discs

CD and DVDs discs are made from a variety of lacquers, aluminium and polycarbonate plastic. Simply disposing of them in the garbage is not the best option as they will still be around for many years to come releasing Bisphenol A, a harmful substance known to cause many health problems. Burning them also releases toxic fumes so this too is not an option.

Unfortunately there is no other way to dispose of your discs your self without harming the environment. You will need to take or post them to various organizations such as Greenhouse that specializes in recycling such materials.
